Carmel-by-the-Sea

Downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea

Looking to explore a beautiful area of California but prefer to avoid the hustle and bustle of big cities like San Francisco or Los Angeles? Enter Carmel-by-the-Sea. Located just south of its’ larger neighbor, Monterey, Carmel-by-the-Sea has a lovely blend of cozy charm with classic California allure. You can arrive here in around 1.5 hours from San Jose or 2 hours from San Francisco. I recommend renting a car when visiting here. While the town of Carmel-by-the-Sea is very walkable, you are also near other treasures such as a coastal drive down Highway 1 and the delicious wines of Carmel Valley. For a longer stay, access to a car will also provide the opportunity for a day trip to Yosemite National Park which is approximately 3.5 hours east.

Downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea is famous for its’ picturesque cottages and will feel as if you’ve walked into a fairy tale. Take your time here to wander through the streets as you enjoy shopping, top class restaurants and tasting rooms where you can sample wines from the Carmel Valley. There are many great lodging options in Carmel and I suggest booking a stay at one of the numerous bed and breakfasts that are known for their complementary in-room sherry bar.

Once you’ve rested and explored the town, take a short drive south to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. Here you can enjoy a scenic hike with dynamic backdrops of rocky cliffs, gnarly trees and the beautiful Pacific Ocean. On your way back to town, consider stopping into San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo. This mission was founded in 1770 and was the second mission of California. Enter through the tranquil courtyard and inside the restored church you’ll find a multitude of art and artifacts.

Golf-lovers will delight to know that Pebble Beach Golf Links is only a 10-minute drive from Carmel. There are also multiple lesser-known but equally beautiful courses close by which offer pristine greens that abut rolling dunes and ocean water.
