The Isle of Skye
The Isle of Skye: Scotland’s Rugged Coastal Gem
Approximately 2.5 hours west of Inverness lies one of Scotland’s most dynamic, enchanting islands. The Isle of Skye is a hiker’s paradise but offers so much more to all who are looking for a great adventure. There are many day trips offered to the Isle of Skye from major cities such as Glasgow and Inverness however the island is best experienced over multiple days. I suggest at least 3 days although you could easily spend a week or longer!
Despite the extensive network of railways in Scotland, the Isle of Skye is more remote with many one lane roads so the best way to navigate the island is by car (or bicycle if you are feeling very adventurous!).
Portree is the capital of the Isle of Skye and is a great jumping-off point for access to great seafood restaurants and to the marina where you can take a boat tour for a beautiful alternative view of the island. There is an abundance of ocean wildlife as well such as dolphins, seals, whales, sea eagles, and puffins (in season).
The scenery of the Isle of Skye is best described as rugged, green and breath-taking. There are multiple ways to experience the scenery. Hike the Old Man of Storr, visit the Fairy Glen and visit a historic castle for an enchanting experience.
There is no shortage of culinary delights in the Isle of Skye. Fresh seafood caught right in the harbor is served all over the island. Trying smoked salmon, some of the best in the world, is a must. It’s not a proper trip to Scotland without a visit to a scotch distillery. There are distilleries on the main island as well as one distillery on the Isle of Raasay which is just a short boat ride from Portee.
